Posted May 18, 2011. i have a 2001 arctic cat 500 that has started back firing and cutting off. it seems to happen more after its been rode a bit but at no particular speed....it will crank back up but continues to try to die and back fire and eventually dies again..any advice on where i should begin looking to fix this problem ...Feb 9, 2014 · Turned off ATV and unplug the two way flat plug. Started the ATV and rode around the barn to warm it up. Turned off again and plugged the two way flat plug in. Started the ATV and the fan did not run. I took the prowler out on its first run under my supervision and bent both tie rods and the tranmission started making a clunking noise shortly after trying to climb a black diamond trail. The rear axle started making a clicking noise first then the transmission started clunking.The sled would die when you came to a stop and it was impossible to start unless u separate the secondary and slide the belt down so there was no tensionUnder your quad in the center of the engine is an oil drain plug, which should be 19mm. Open that up and drain the oil into an oil pan. You will need to get a strap/filter wrench to take the oil filter off.
